The number of carloads moved on short line and regional railroad in January 2022 was down compared to January 2021. Carloads originated decreased 4.1 percent, from 332,258 in January 2021 to 318,672 in January 2022. 

Metallic Ores led gains with a 40.3 percent increase. Crushed Stone, Sand and Gravel was up 20.6 percent, and Petroleum Products and Nonmetallic Minerals increased 12.8 percent and 8.7 percent, respectively. Coal led declines, down 29.9 percent. Metals and Products, Chemicals, Pulp, Paper and Allied Products, Motor Vehicles and Equipment, Grain, Lumber and Wood Products, Trailer or Container, Stone, Clay and Glass Products and All Other Carloads were also down in January.
